The Tragedy of the Duchess of Malfi by John Webster
The Duchess of Malfey is a play with strong moral purpose, potrayed through the familiar Jacobean themes of jealousy, violence and revenge.
The Duchess, a young widow, is determined to re-marry, her brothers, the devious Cardinal and unstable Ferdinand, are determined that she shall not. They hire Bosola, a cynical veteran of espionage and violence, to spy on her.
Her marriage to one of her senior servants and the birth of a son being discovered, Bosola is commissioned to imprison, torture and kill both her and the child.
Bosola's remorse for the horrors that ensue brings down retribution and further tragedy on the doomed house of Malfi.
